The strategic orientation of the Republic of Macedonia is to become a member of the European Union. This is causing substantial changes in the Macedonian economy.

EU funding programmes are devoted to strengthening and assisting the economy for stronger development in many areas. Given that the Macedonian economy is weak in many sectors, almost all private and public entities are eligible candidates to utilise the financial assistance offered by EU and European funds.

The EU funding programmes give great opportunities for Macedonian public and private entities. However, the complicated rules and procedures that the eligible candidates for tese programmes must adhere to during the process of application, often means that additional advisory help is needed.

Between 1992 and 2006 Republic of Macedonia received approximately EUR800.000.000 from the EU programmes, which annually comes to under EUR60.000.000. However, the funds for each of these years were never fully used.. From 1997 to 2005, only 62% of the possible assistance was used.

In future, the support from the EU to the Republic of Macedonia will be awarded through the Instrument of Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA). This instrument, now in force, is part of the EU’s 2007-2013 Financial Perspective. Macedonia will receive a minimum of EUR70.000.000 and EUR80.000.000 per year.
